Cooking, community, and daily nourishment—powered by young people, and sustained by donor support.
At LightHouse Holyoke, lunch is a living part of our learning model. In our fully equipped commercial kitchen, students cook real food for the whole community, build practical skills, and share a family-style meal that anchors the rhythm of each day.
This program is open to anyone curious about cooking, nutrition, and food culture, whether they’re exploring a new interest or preparing for a culinary career.
And because daily shared meals are vital for our students, the program is sustained through community giving.

“I didn’t even know I liked cooking until I got to help make lunch here. Now I’m researching recipes and cooking at home, and thinking about it as maybe my future career”.
-Jayden, 2025
Our Culinary Program, led by Chef Blue, gives students hands-on experience in:
Cooking and baking
Knife skills and kitchen safety
Nutrition and menu planning
Working in a commercial kitchen
Food service and hospitality
Students can participate at any level—from helping cook lunch a few days a week to pursuing deeper training and earning industry-recognized credentials like ServeSafe.
Those who want to continue beyond the classroom can access paid culinary internships and event support roles through our onsite performing arts center, De la Luz Soundstage.
Shared lunch at LightHouse is a leadership and learning experience as much as it is a fresh and nutritious meal. Students work together to prepare food for the whole community, practice collaboration, and take pride in serving others. Then we sit down—students and adults together—for a family-style meal that sets a positive tone for the rest of the day.
It’s a daily moment where confidence grows, relationships strengthen, and young people experience what it means to be part of something bigger than themselves.
In the kitchen, students learn teamwork, leadership, and practical skills. At the table, they experience what it feels like to be part of a community that looks out for one another.
It’s simple. And it’s powerful. (and it's delicious!)
