This comprehensive course covers the foundations of personal health and human sexuality through an inclusive, respectful, and medically accurate lens. Students will explore what it means to live a healthy life, with instruction grounded in harm reduction and affirming of LGBTQIA+ identities and experiences.
Topics include:
Physical Health: Nutrition, lifestyle choices, exercise, and strategies for maintaining well-being and reducing the risk of disease.
Anatomy and Physiology: Understanding the basic functions and structures of reproductive and sexual anatomy, including cis male, cis female, and intersex variations.
Substance Use: Factual information about drugs and alcohol, including the risks, effects, resources for addiction recovery, and tools such as naloxone (Narcan) for overdose response.
Sexual Health: Consent, contraception, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and safer sexual practices—all taught with clarity, care, and inclusivity.
Navigating the Healthcare System: How to schedule appointments, understand health insurance, and advocate for oneself in medical settings.
Identity and Relationships: Respectful dialogue around gender identity, sexual orientation, communication, personal boundaries, and values.
This class is open to students of all ages, though some topics may be especially relevant to older students. Due to the sensitive and personal nature of the material, bigoted, disruptive, or unwelcoming behavior will not be tolerated and may result in removal from the class.
This course is designed to support the development of key graduation competencies, including Self-Awareness and Identity, Applied Scientific Reasoning, and Health and Sexuality. These competencies are required for graduation.
Classroom Norms and Cell Phone Use:
Students are expected to engage with maturity and care. Cell phones must be put away during class unless the teacher invites their use for a specific activity or resource.
