The Board of Directors of LightHouse has named Diana Sutton-Fernández as the Chair of the Board and Joan Shulman as Vice Chair.

Diana Sutton-Fernández is a resident of Holyoke, current member of the Board of the United Way of Hampshire County, and a past member of the Board of The Care Center. She is also the Chief Diversity Officer at Hampshire College in Amherst.

“Several months ago I was introduced to the then-concept of Lighthouse,” said Sutton- Fernández, “and immediately knew that I wanted to, no I needed to be part of this journey. I needed to be involved with Lighthouse because I believe that there is no one single approach to education.”

Sutton-Fernández added that “we have to empower our young adults to take ownership of their education. Whether it’s learning entrepreneurship, arts, music, dance, history, or literature, our young adults will be successful because learning is something you DO, not something you endure.”

Joan Shulman, based in eastern Massachusetts, is the owner of Joan Shulman Coaching and is a certified professional coach. She previously served as the Director of Counseling Services for the Parker Charter Essential School, and as a grants administrator for nonprofit organizations.

LightHouse is opening this September in the Innovation District of Holyoke, and will serve 45 students, ages 13-18, weekdays from 8:30am to 3:00pm. LightHouse uses a personalized approach to education, working with each student to set academic and personal goals and to design their individual curriculum.

With the election of Sutton-Fernández and Shulman, the LightHouse Board is now focusing on the strategic development of the organization, including a ongoing focus on building local partnerships.

“We have been so fortunate to benefit over these past months from the guidance and expertise of a top-rate board,” said Josiah S. Litant, LightHouse Co-Founder and Co- Director. “We are confident that, particularly under Diana and Joan’s leadership, LightHouse is now well positioned to launch this fall, and to offer a truly innovative educational model for teens in Western Mass.”
